Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash + Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffuser + 4 Batteries & Charger for Nikon D700, D300, D200, D90, D60, D5000, D40, D3000 & D300s Digital SLR Cameras Review

Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash + Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffuser + 4 Batteries & Charger for Nikon D700, D300, D200, D90, D60, D5000, D40, D3000 & D300s Digital SLR CamerasIf you are a pro then you need more features than the sb400 can provide but for amateurs and beginners like myself the value is there.Spending $100 on a flash seems outrageous to me and most people I know so spending 2 times or even 3 times that was hard for me to swallow.

I'm glad I bought the kit because the diffuser really helps to lessen redeye indoors. You can also rotate the flash to bounce off the ceiling if the ceiling is low enough and bright enough. In other cases you should use the diffuser.

The battery back is a generic deal. They work and hold charge so its good enough for me.

Designed to be an ideal flash unit for beginners, it's also a good choice for hobbyists desiring an affordable i-TTL flash with bounce flash capability.
The Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce is a compact diffusion dome that easily attaches to your flash to create a beautifully diffused lighting effect which results in soft wrap-around lighting on the subject and provides a softer and less noticeable shadow behind the subject.

Sto-Fen OMNI-BOUNCE OM-600 - Flash diffuser Review

Sto-Fen OMNI-BOUNCE OM-600 - Flash diffuserThis seemingly simple piece of molded plastic was recommended to me by a professional photographer.Basically it's the shape of an open box that slides firmly onto the flash. It is small and sturdy enough to stash in your camera bag without worrying about damage. When used the light disperses more evenly and is less harsh on the subject being photographed.

The white box is for general use. Also available are the green Omni-bounce for florescent lighting and the gold Omni-bounce for a warming effect.

PROS:
Inexpensive solution for better flash photography.
A quality product that works.

CONS:
None

Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D80 & D90 Digital SLR Cameras Review

Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D80 & D90 Digital SLR CamerasIt's no surprise that when you stand in front of the camera and push the
button, the remote triggers the shutter. There does seem to be some
confusion in reviews, both here and elsewhere, as to the remote's ability
to focus the lens before triggering the shutter.

This remote is capable of focusing the lens before triggering the shutter.
However, it will not focus the lens if the photographer has already
pushed the shutter release button on the camera half way down to focus
the image or if you are shooting in Manual mode and have AF-C set as
the Autofocus mode.

This means that if you are composing a photograph and push the shutter
button half way down to focus the image and you then stand in front of
the camera and push the remote button, the image will not focus
because you've already pushed the camera shutter release button half
way down to focus. To get the image to focus while you are standing in
front of the camera, compose the shot but do not push the camera's
shutter release button half way down, get in front of the camera and
then push the button.

Ultralast Nikon Stand, AS-19, Speedlight Stand for Review

Ultralast Nikon Stand, AS-19, Speedlight Stand forThis versatile speedlight stand has three positions on it to choose from for placing your speedlight.
It also has a 1/4 inch metal tripod socket underneath (same threads as your camera).
It can also be placed on a table or shelf by itself.
This will work with the SB-600 and the SB-800 speedlights.
Unfortunately, it will not work with Nikon's flagships speedlight, the SB-900.
The SB-900 comes with its own speedlight stand, the AS-21.
The AS-21 only has one position and the tripod socket is plastic.
However, the AS-21 is backwards compatible with many of the other speedlights and it is larger to accommodate the SB-900's bulk.
I would like to see Nikon update the AS-19 to work with the SB-900 or make the AS-21 with a metal tripod socket.
I think the metal tripod socket is a big plus, not to mention the three positions.
I deducted one star because of the incompatibility with the SB-900.

Phoenix SmartFlash 99N for Nikon i-TTL Digital SLR Cameras Review

Phoenix SmartFlash 99N for Nikon i-TTL Digital SLR CamerasI bought this flash with the hopes that I could get a good, reliable flash without having to spend more on the Nikon Speedlight. While the flash itself did all that it promised, once I mounted it on the camera it was unreliable at best.It was almost as if the contacts for the hotshoe did not line up.My on-camera flash kept responding, but not the Phoenix.Once in a while I could finesse it into position long enough to get one or two shots, which turned out very nice, but then it would stop communicating with the camera again. After doing some more on-line research it seems that this is true for other "off-brand" flashes that claim to be compatible with the Nikon. In the end I returned the Phoenix and am awaiting the Nikon Speedlight.I guess this is one of those situations where you just have to spend the money to get what you really want.

Nissin Di622 Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, Guide number 145 Review

Nissin Di622 Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, Guide number 145I'm not a professional photographer so I really don't want to spend a lot for a flash. Then I read about Nissin Di622 which is manufactured by one of Japan's oldest camera flash manufacturers. As soon as I received this flash, I decided to compare it to my friend's Canon 430EX II which he highly recommends for my Canon XSi. So here are the reasons why I highly recommend this flash:

1) First of all, the price. Di622 is solidly built that cost almost half the price of the equivalent Canon 430EX II.

2) It comes with TTL (Through The Lens) flash metering system which you would normally find on a high end flash.

3) The zoom flash head can tilt/swivel and turn all the way back which I find a must have to create directional light shooting indoors by bouncing off the walls or ceiling.

4) Its also great slave flash. It synchronizes very well with the master flash.

5) It comes with built-in wide angle Diffuser and fill-in Reflector panel. I use the Diffuser a lot to create softer light.

6) It automatically enters sleep mode when it's not in use for 5 min and is reset with a touch of the shutter button or any button of the flash.

Overall, I find Nissin Di622 well made and equivalent to a Canon 430EX II. For the price difference, I decided to buy a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens.

Understanding the Nikon Speedlight: SB-900, SB-800, SB-600 Review

Understanding the Nikon Speedlight: SB-900, SB-800, SB-600Good overview of how to finally master the Nikon Creative Lighting System.Only knock on this is that spends a fair amount of time on the SB900 capabilities -- so for those of us who aren't spending that kind of dough and have the SB600 several of the menu elements don't come into play. Also uses several physical setups that are beyond what an amateur photographer would normally have.
