Nikon School DVD - Understanding Digital Photography Review

A 45 minute DVD in which presenter Bob Krist explains some of his more favourite settings on the Nikon D200 camera and the way in which he puts them to good effect. This product is more suited to owners of the D200 if only because they will recognise the various camera features which are highlighted as Mr Krist uses them.

Whilst the content was interesting, I found it difficult to identify exactly which category of photographer at whom this DVD is aimed. If, like myself, you have just purchased your very first DSLR (Digital single lens reflex camera) and are wondering where to start, I would suggest this is not the DVD for you. If, however, you have started to take some decent photos, it should help you progress onto slightly (but only slightly) more advanced techniques. If you are already well down the road of taking excellent photographs using the many varied settings that are available on the modern DSLR then you will gain little from this product.

I really must register my overall disappointment. Just think about the product titles. Firstly we have a DVD from the "Nikon School." I would have thought the very word Nikon would ensure a content worthy of that name. But not so. Secondly, the DVD is called "Understanding Digital Photography." I may be a newcomer to the DSLR but, like Mr Krist, I too have sold my photography to National Geographic and I am also an award-winning author. My understanding of digital photography, however, was not enhanced by this product and my overall knowledge is no richer for my having studied the content closely.

Opteka Flash Diffuser for the Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash Review

The benefit of a diffuser is that it's supposed to send the flash light in all directions so that it bounces off walls and ceilings as well as getting directly to the subject. The body of the SB400 doesn't tilt upwards, you swivel just the flash head. In which position the Opteka diffuser won't fit at all so you can't use it. You can only use it when the head is pointing at the subject so most of the flash energy is going forward through the diffuser, which means that it's still mostly direct light.
Even with the flash head pointing forward the Opteka doesn't fit properly and I suspect it wasn't designed for the SB-400 in the first place

Flash works great and it is always good to have extra batteries. The one downside -- using this bracket when shooting vertical is a bit awkward.

The benefit of this package from Cameta is that it's a little bit of everything that you need. Between the Flash unit, an SB-600which is a great stand alone flash, but is capable of being upgraded by an SB-800 or SB-900 whichever price bracket suits your fancy. It provides great lighting both bounced and direct.

The Stroboframe and i-TTL cord are worth their weights in gold if you ask me. The stroboframe is lightweight, easy to attach, and easy to use. With just a push, you keep the flash above the lens, for when you switch from landscape to portrait. The cord simply allows the camera to communicate with the flash while it is being used off camera.

This was a great buy. So far so good. It came in a timely manor and because it came with the batteries and charger, I was able to plug it in to charge and used it the next day. I can really tell a difference with this flash compared to the camera's built in flash on my Nikon D40X. I took a picture in a dark room with just a little sunlight coming through, and the photo came out looking like I took it in the perfect lighted conditions.

This flash diffuser would be great, I'm sure, if it actually fit the Nikon SB-600. However, it doesn't, so it's pretty worthless. It slips off very easily, even when I thought I had a tight seal. Don't buy this.
